How to Buy Original Art: A Collector’s Guide

Original artworks

Buying original art is one of the most personal and rewarding ways to collect art. An original artwork is a one-of-a-kind piece, created directly by the artist, and owning one offers a unique connection to the creative process.

This guide explains what original art is, how to assess quality and value, and how to buy original artworks with confidence.

Original artwork is ‘One-of-a-kind’ or 1/1 – a single piece created by the artist

Often there may be ‘no reproductions’ e.g. sculpture. With my own artwork I publish a small limited edition run of only 100 prints.

Artist-created surface – the artworks are painted and created soley by the artist.

Direct provenance – you can link the piece directly back to the artist who created it. I supply a ‘COA’ Certificate Of Authenticity with every one of my pieces.

Why Collect Original Art?

Exclusivity – there is only one piece in the world.

Emotional connection – I always tell my clients ‘buy it because you like it, or it speaks or moves you, the piece that drew you in should be the one for you’.

Long-term value – Original art always has an intrinsic value.

Supporting living artists – This is my favourite…’Buy art from living artists – The dead ones don’t need the money!’

What to Look for When Buying Original Art

What medium is it? Oil, acrylic, mixed media, watercoulour etc

Condition – Is the piece new, showing signs of wear etc

Scale – Will it fit where I plan to locate it? How will it look on the wall, too big, too small, just right!

Signature – Has it been signed on the front / back or both?

Documentation – Is there a COA?

Original Art vs Limited Edition Prints

Not everyone can afford orginal artwork or maybe you’re just starting out either way it’s still nice to have an individually signed and numbered piece that has been ‘touched by the artist’. Again make sure you get a COA.

Where to Buy Original Art Safely

If you’re looking to buy original artworks, explore curated original artworks for sale directly from the artist, where provenance, materials, and authenticity are clearly documented.

Buying Original Art With Confidence

Confidence is one of the most important factors when buying original artworks. Knowing that a piece is genuinely one-of-a-kind, understanding the materials used, and having clarity around provenance allows collectors to focus on what truly matters — connection and enjoyment. Buying directly from the artist or a trusted gallery helps ensure transparency, authenticity, and long-term satisfaction.

For first-time buyers, original art does not need to feel intimidating. Taking time to learn, asking questions, and choosing artworks that resonate personally will always lead to a more rewarding collecting experience.

How Original Art Fits Into a Growing Collection

For many collectors, buying original art marks an important milestone. Original artworks often become the centrepiece of a collection, shaping how other works are chosen and displayed. Because each piece is unique, original art tends to hold strong emotional value and can develop a personal history between the collector and the artist.

When collecting original artworks, it’s worth considering how a piece fits into your wider collection over time. Some collectors begin with limited edition art prints before moving into originals, while others focus exclusively on one-of-a-kind works from the outset. There is no right or wrong approach — the key is choosing artworks that resonate with you and feel meaningful within your space.

Buying original art is ultimately about connection. When you understand what defines an original artwork, how to assess quality, and where to buy with confidence, collecting becomes an enjoyable and rewarding experience rather than an intimidating one.
